Fr David Duane passed away peacefully on the 23rd July 2022 at Daisy Hill Hospital, NI. 

Dearly beloved brother of Elizabeth FitzGerald and the late Carl R.I.P (Class of 1955). Deeply regretted by his sorrowing sister, nephews Cormac, Donogh, Ronan and David, nieces Bláithín, Dearbhla, Monenna, Fionnuala, Emer and Michelle and entire family circle.  Fr David’s requiem mass took place on Tuesday 26th July at St Malachy’s, Castlewellan.

Fr David was born in 1934 in Derry and attended St Columba’s Primary School, Waterside, and then to Presentation College, Glasthule and Blackrock College. 

Fr David studied philosophy at UCD and went to Holy Cross College Clonliffe and St Peter’s College, Wexford where he was ordained to the priesthood on 5th June 1960.

Fr David was assistant priest at English Martyrs, Preston 1960-1966, St Mary’s Barrow in Furness 1966-1972, Our Lady & St Patrick, Maryport 1972-1975, Sacred Heart Preston 1975-1979 and St John Vianney, Blackpool May-September 1979.

He was parish priest of St Thomas More, Lancaster 1979-1987, Our Lady & St Patrick, Maryport & Our Lady of the Assumption, Silloth 1987-1999, Christ the King, Milnthorpe 1999-2000.  After a short time in Lancaster, he moved to Our Lady of the Wayside, Grasmere, in 2004.  He later assumed responsibility for the chapel of St Philip Howard, Glenridding in 2006, and also the parish of Mater Amabilis, Ambleside, from where he retired in 2013 to live near family in Castlewellan, Co Down.
