Past vs Present Debate: A Night of Spirited Argument and Historic Victory

The annual Past vs Present debate took centre stage in the College Library on January 28th, 2025, bringing together generations of students to tackle a contentious and timely motion: “This house would ban fee-paying schools to level the playing field.”

The debate saw a passionate exchange of ideas, with the current students—Ishaan Pandey, Leo Fowler, and Peter O'Connor (all Sixth Year) alongside Jamie Browne-Lynch (Fifth Year)—advocating in favour of the motion. They argued that fee-paying schools create an uneven playing field, reinforcing social inequality. Their case rested on the idea that banning such schools would foster a fairer education system by ensuring equal access to resources, teachers, and opportunities within the state sector.

Facing them was a formidable team of past students: Prof. Matthew Sadlier (Class of 1993), Russell Rochford (1995), James Carroll (2022), and Patrick Hayden (2024). They put forth a strong rebuttal, emphasising the strain such a ban would place on the state education system, the erosion of parental choice, and—perhaps most controversially—the potential decline in Ireland’s rugby success!

After 40 minutes of rigorous debate and spirited rebuttals, the adjudicators reached their verdict—marking a rare and historic win for the past students, breaking years of dominance by the present team. However, individual honours went to Ishaan Pandey, who was awarded Best Speaker of the Night for his compelling arguments and delivery.

The evening was expertly chaired by Past President John O'Doherty (1986), with President Karl O'Neill presenting the winners’ medals.

Once again, the Past vs Present debate proved to be a highlight of the academic year, showcasing the depth of critical thinking, eloquence, and school spirit across generations.
