The 97th edition of The Irish Times Shield took place on Sunday at Powerscourt Golf Club, showcasing Ireland's top single-digit handicappers. Despite challenging weather conditions in County Wicklow, competitors from 20 clubs delivered outstanding performances. The highlight of the day was 16-year-old Patrick Burke, a current pupil of Blackrock College, who shot an impressive three-under-par 69, including birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. His performance was pivotal in securing Foxrock Golf Club's victory, with the team of Burke, Alan Stirrat, Graham O'Connor, and John Maguire—all Blackrock College alumni—clinching the shield with 103 points.
Delgany Golf Club led for much of the competition with a score of 101 points, but Foxrock emerged victorious in the end. The Blackrock College Union expressed immense pride in their former students' achievements. Burke’s exceptional round, along with strong contributions from his teammates, brought further distinction to the school. Meanwhile, the nett prize went to John Nolan from Grange Golf Club, highlighting the diverse range of talent across all age groups.
