A true Legend Christy McDaid RIP

Christopher "Christy" McDaid, of Bundoran, Co. Donegal, and Dublin, passed away on February 26, 2025, after a short illness bravely borne, with his soulmate and best friend, Mirette, by his side.

Predeceased by his parents, William and Mary Ellen; his brother and sister, Charles Joseph and Mary Patricia, who both died in infancy; and his brother, Bishop Emeritus Liam MacDaid, Christy is survived by his cousins, extended family, and a wide circle of friends and former colleagues.

A retired teacher, Christy dedicated his career to educating young minds at Presentation Brothers N.S. in Glasthule and Willow Park School in Blackrock. In 1989, he founded the Willow Wheelers Cycling Club, which has grown to become one of Ireland's largest cycling clubs, focusing on the development of junior cyclists and fostering a love for cycling among members of all ages.

Christy's commitment extended beyond Ireland, as he was deeply involved with missionary communities in Dublin, Africa, and Brazil. Under his leadership, the Willow Wheelers organised annual 100-mile charity cycles to raise funds for water, health, and education projects in developing countries. These efforts supported Irish missionaries working in deprived areas, providing essential resources for local projects.

In recognition of his contributions, Christy received the 2017 President's Award from the Blackrock College Past Pupils Union.

A commemorative Mass was held on March 1, 2025, at the Church of the Assumption in Booterstown, Dublin, followed by a procession through Willow Park School and Blackrock College. Funeral prayers took place at Breslin's Funeral Home in Bundoran on March 3, 2025, followed by a Funeral Mass at the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea and burial at St. Ninnidhs Cemetery, Newtown, Bundoran.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Christy's memory can be made to the Willow Wheelers Charity.

Christy's warmth, dedication, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The Willow Wheelers have lots of past students across all sections of the club who will continue his great work.
